New Yorkers deserve libraries that are in good condition, that do not have leaks, that are handicap accessible, that have heat in the winter and AC in the summer. The people of this city deserve to have libraries that are functional, well maintained, and comfortable. Every person in the City deserves this no matter what neighborhood or borough they live in. Capital funds impact the buildings, the spaces, and the support systems of our libraries. We can’t serve our public if we can’t open the doors and we have decades of neglect to make up for before everyone in the City has fair access to libraries that are in the same condition.
Libraries are the infrastructure that holds our communities together, and that is why the libraries are asking to be added to the 10 year capital plan with a funding level of $900 million. Sound buildings mean that our communities have the type of space they need and deserve to facilitate their learning and growth.
